Intro
Our hemato-oncology team diagnoses and treats cancers and non-cancerous disorders of the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. Blood disorders often need specialised tests to reach an accurate diagnosis, and treatment is planned around the exact type of disease, its genetic features and the patient's overall health.
Leukemia
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. It can be acute (developing quickly) or chronic (developing slowly), and affects both children and adults. Treatment depends on the type and genetic profile of the leukemia and may include chemotherapy, targeted therapy or stem cell transplant.
Lymphoma
Lymphoma starts in the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell found in lymph nodes, the spleen and other tissues. The two main groups are Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Many lymphomas respond well to treatment, which is planned according to the subtype and stage.
Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. It can affect the bones, kidneys and blood counts. Modern treatment combinations and stem cell transplant have made long-term control possible for many patients.
Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
MDS is a group of conditions in which the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells. It can cause anemia, infections or bleeding and, in some patients, can progress to leukemia. Care ranges from monitoring and supportive treatment to disease-directed therapy.
Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN)
MPNs are conditions in which the bone marrow makes too many of one type of blood cell. They include polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and myelofibrosis. Many patients live well for years with the right monitoring and treatment to reduce complications.
Other Blood Disorders
We also treat non-cancerous blood conditions, including anemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, and low platelet counts (ITP). Accurate diagnosis is the first step, as many of these conditions can be well managed with the right treatment.
Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplant
For certain blood cancers and bone marrow disorders, a stem cell transplant can offer the best chance of long-term control or cure. Our team guides patients through evaluation, donor matching (where needed), the transplant itself and recovery, and works closely with partner transplant units to do so.
At Athira, treatment begins with understanding your diagnosis, your biology and your individual needs.
